Principal Assigned, High School; Virtual Learning

Please Note: This position is only open to currently appointed and tenured NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) Principals.

Position Summary

The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of 1 million students and 75,000+ teachers in over 1,800+ schools. New York City Public Schools is committed to reimagining education by:

  • Becoming the first major public-school system to develop, implement and expand high quality virtual learning programs for instruction, for all students who choose this option.
  • Assisting students in achieving their highest potential academically, socially and emotionally and preparing them for post-secondary success.
  • Developing and scaling virtual instructional and related services opportunities for eligible students that best meet the needs of students and families and create access for-eligible students via virtual learning and hybrid scheduling.
  • Creating new and attractive professional experiences, career opportunities and/or alternative schedules for pedagogues and school-based staff within existing contractual rules.

Virtual Learning Classrooms (VLC) and School Based Virtual Learning (SBVL) will enact this vision, by leveraging technology to enhance and expand the way NYC school communities experience teaching and learning. Specifically, students will have greater choice and flexibility, post-secondary readiness experiences, and access to excellently trained virtual learning educators from across the city.

Virtual Learning Classrooms (VLC) offer remote learning opportunities to students from across the city. To provide increased equity and access to courses, the program offers middle and high schools the opportunity to enroll students in classes that are not currently offered at their school, including world language, Advanced Placement classes, and electives. Schools are able to increase their course offerings and help students earn advanced diplomas. The live classes are taught synchronously by excellent, certified teachers from around the city. Students from multiple schools with similar bell schedules are enrolled in a class. Using Zoom, iLearn, and other platforms, students interact with the teacher and other students as they participate in rigorous and engaging classes. Classes are available both during the regular school day as well as nontraditional times.

School-Based Virtual Learning (SBVL) program was established to allow school communities to create school-level virtual learning programs to meet the needs and demands of students. School Based Virtual Learning programs are taught by current teachers and are attended by current students. The SBVL program provides virtual learning opportunities to students in participating schools in a variety of subjects and using flexible models to meet students' needs. It differs from Virtual Learning Classrooms, the central-based model, in that teachers and students are all from one school community. SBVL is designed with input from the school community and consider flexibilities that meet unique student needs, family requests, and teacher availability.

The Principal Assigned will be responsible for supervising, evaluating, and supporting VLC teachers, designing professional development, and supporting administrators with the SBVL application process and implementation. Responsible for supporting multiple aspects of implementation of both programs including providing guidance and support regarding program planning and development, supervision and professional learning, including in person school visits.
