Chancellor Carranza Celebrates Fifth Annual Borough Arts Festivals
Approximately 3,200 students across five boroughs have showcased their work
NEW YORK – Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza today celebrates the fifth annual Borough Arts Festivals, a series of borough-wide events in which students showcase the visual and performing arts projects they’ve completed throughout the school year. He will attend the Performing Arts Showcase at the Apollo Theater in Manhattan this evening.
Approximately 3,200 students in grades pre-K through 12 from approximately 500 schools across the five boroughs have displayed their work at art galleries, theaters, museums and public spaces throughout the city. These include the Museum of Modern Art, the Apollo Theater, the Queens Museum, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the Kings Theatre, the St. George Theatre, Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College and Lehman College.
The Borough Arts Festival began in 2015 as part of the administration’s annual $23 million investment in expanding arts programming, renovating arts spaces, and hiring new teachers. The 2017-18 Arts in Schools Report highlighted a record $433 million citywide investment in arts education, up nearly $100 million from $366 million at the start of this administration.
“High-quality arts education has opened so many doors in my life, and the Borough Arts Festivals are an opportunity to showcase the incredible work our students are doing in the classroom because of our continued investment in arts education across the City,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “Thank you to the City’s cultural institutions for your continued partnership, and congratulations to this year’s festival exhibitors. I am excited to attend the last festival of the season tonight, and I can’t wait to see where your talents take you.”
