(CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING AVAILABILITY AND PROGRAMMATIC APPROVAL; this position is subject to budget approval and availability and may be withdrawn at any time)

 

POSITION:                 

K-12 social studies/civics/humanities or math teacher, collaborating ENL teacher and bilingual teacher and/or teacher who has an ENL/bilingual extension who support math and/or social studies/civics/humanities instruction; or

Common branch teacher with a bilingual/ENL extension who teaches/co-teaches grade K-6 math or social studies/humanities 

Participate in the 2024-24SY cohort and agree/commit to foreground language instruction and community-based inquiries into a unit of study from their adopted core curriculum through a PBL model designed by the Office of Multilingual Learners (OML). More precisely, focus group participants will use OML’s PBL with ELLs in Mind Planning Tool to design/enhance, implement, assess a PBL instructional unit and showcase their work and the work completed by students. All resources developed by focus groups and paid through per-session hours shall be available in Google folders that are owned by OML.

In-person sessions (applicants must be available to travel to training site when and if needed); locations TBA

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:          

Certified by New York State Social Studies/civics/Humanities or Mathematics and Engineering teacher or common branch and/or ENL/bilingual teachers grades K-12, currently teaching and/or supporting core content SY23-24 and/or World Language teacher whose school are part of the Seal of Biliteracy.

  • Permission from principal/supervisor to participate in OML’s PBL with MLs/ELLs in Mind Collaborative and a focus group
  • Available to attend all 4 in-person training days:
    • Session 1: Wednesday, 9/25/24 9:00am-3:00pm
    • Session 2: Wednesday, 11/13/24 9:00am-3:00pm
    • Session 3: Wednesday, 1/15/25 9:00am-3:00pm
    • Session 4: Wednesday, 3/12/259:00am-3:00pm; plus
  • Available to attend all virtual focus group sessions (10/09/24; 12/04/24; 02/12/25; 04/02/25); plus
  • Work individually and/or in teams to use OML’s PBL planning tool to design/enhance, implement, assess and showcase a Project-Based Learning unit of instruction, alongside student PBL projects.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:  

  • Highly Effective/Effective experience within the NYCDOE social studies/civics/humanities, math or common branch (grade K-6) and/or ENL/bilingual/WL teacher
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience in the respective content area and permission from your Principal to participate in this series and extended project (e.g., math or social studies/humanities focus group)
  • Currently assigned and teaching (or co-teaching) social studies/civics/humanities or math and/or ENL/bilingual/WL supporting social studies/civics/humanity disciplines and/or math during the 2024-25 school year
  • Skilled and experienced in teaching MLs/ELLs at the elementary, middle or high and Transfer school levels
  • Equipped with expertise in designing and implementing formative assessments with MLs/ELLs in mind
  • Knowledge of and experienced in designing and implementing PBL preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of how to scaffold grade level texts and tasks for MLs/ELLs 
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
  • Ability to meet benchmarks and deadlines for resource development
  • Able to attend online meetings and professional learning, engaging in digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Commitment from participants to attend all in-person and virtual sessions; commitment to design/enhance a PBL unit using an existing unit of instruction from their adopted core curriculum and OML’s PBL with ELLs in Mind Planning Tool either individually and/or in teams as well as commitment to implement, assess and showcase the work
  • Open to rounds of feedback and revisions of PBL unit developed before during and after implementation 
  • Ability and willingness to open classrooms to visitations during the winter/spring of the 2024-25 school year
  • Pilot developed material and provide teacher and/or student samples to OML for analysis, reflection, reproduction and distribution
  • Adhere to most current NYCPS COVID policies; Respect for All policies; Meet the Moment policies, etc.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed

 

WORK SCHEDULE:   

Hours up to, but not limited to, approximately 30 hours total per participant outside of their contractual hours beginning October 2024 through June 2025 for designing and creating instructional, curricular and professional materials.

 

Hours up to, but not limited to the approximate number of hours listed. Additional hours granted upon the approval of the hiring manager.

 

SALARY:                     

Per session rates as per the relevant union/organization of the advertised title (Collective Bargaining Agreement).  Contingent Upon Funding Availability.
